Engage Glasgow Annual Report
In autumn 2007, the Glasgow Community Planning Partnership commissioned Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector to develop on their behalf, the Community Engagement Database, known as ‘Engage’.
Engage is a powerful resource that provides users access to information and data about Glasgow’s community and voluntary sector organisations.
Engage Glasgow has released its first Annual Report. The report highlights the uses of the database in its first 18 months of existence, and provides a summary of some of the key characteristics of the community and voluntary sector in the City.
Listing over 1,600 organisations, with and without paid staff, it is clear from the report that the sheer scope of the dataset makes Engage a powerful tool:
• it helps to promote community engagement by providing a very efficient means for community planning partners, and community and voluntary organisations themselves, to find out about and get in touch with relevant organisations in Glasgow.
• it provides a profile of the voluntary and community sector in Glasgow giving details, for example, on activities, target groups, volunteers and finance.
Highlights from the profile of the sector include:
• most community and voluntary organisations are small, with more than half relying on less than ten paid staff or volunteers
• an army of over 50,000 volunteers are engaged by the 1,600 plus community and voluntary groups identified on Engage
• these volunteers contributed more than 4.5 million hours to providing services across Glasgow
• around one-third of groups or organisations support health & social care-related activities, with over one-in-five supporting sport, leisure, arts or cultural services
Since its launch, 11,000 visitors have accessed Engage, with over 2,700 separate reports generated. Currently, there are almost 300 registered users benefiting from the information they can extract from Engage.
Engage will continue to grow and develop as new records are added, providing an evermore comprehensive directory of the organisations so important to our communities.
