Cluniac Celebration 1,100 years – Glasgow sends letter to Paisley Abbey

Historic Glasgow will be organising the commemoration of the letter of 1408 that was sent to the Abbot of Paisley. Matthew Glendining Bishop of Glasgow had lifted the ban of excommunication from the abbot after several years of dispute regarding the “rights of visitation” to Paisley Abbey.

Since this event happened in Bishop’s Palace in Lochwood, a commemoration to mark this part of the Cluniac celebration at Bishop Loch will be held.

On March 30th Bishop Devine, Archbishop Conti and the Minister of Glasgow Cathedral Dr Laurence Whitley will view the letter at Bishop Loch, where there will be a photocall for the press. Members of the public are invited to attend. After which there will be a reception at in St Mungo’s Museum for members of the community to meet the Bishops and Ministers. Members of Historic Glasgow team and Museum Staff will show a DVD of Medieval Glasgow and display findings from the Lochwood excavation on site of the Bishop’s Palace. Headland Archaeologist Mark Roberts, Dr Irene O’Brien and Dr Mary McHugh will be present to answer any questions. Transport will be provided to and from Easterhouse to St Mungo’s Museum.

This is the launch of the Glasgow Cluniac celebration as a Heritage event to promote medieval Glasgow. A tour of the Cathedral will be arranged for community representatives after the reception. The significance of Greater Easterhouse and Lochwood has been identified to launch this event for Glasgow to show the great medieval heritage associating Scotland with Europe and the Cluniac monastic reforms started from Cluny.
